Can Amethyst Get Wet? Is Salt Water and Hot Water safe ?

You’ve probably heard a lot about amethyst, its beautiful purple hue, its calming properties, and its widespread use in crystal healing. But there’s one question I often hear: Can amethyst get wet?

The answer is yes, amethyst can go in water, but there are some things you need to know to keep it in top condition. In this guide, I’ll dive into everything you need to know about amethyst and water, from cleaning to wearing it in the shower, and I’ll share some tips from my own experiences to help you care for your precious gemstone.

Can Amethyst Go in Water?

Yes, Amethyst Can Get Wet – Here’s Why!

The answer to this common question is simple: yes, amethyst can get wet! Because of its hardness ranking is 7 on the Mohs scale amethyst is resilient enough to withstand contact with water. Unlike softer stones like calcite, which can dissolve or crack when exposed to water, amethyst remains intact and unaffected by fresh water.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Fresh Water is Safe: You can safely submerge your amethyst in fresh water (like tap water, rainwater, or water from a lake) without worrying about it being damaged.
  • Saltwater : Salt can be harsh on amethyst if you smudge it for prolonged period it’s important to rinse it thoroughly with fresh water afterward to remove any salt residue.
  • Hotswater : While water itself won’t damage amethyst, temperature changes can be problematic because Sudden shifts in temperature, such as moving from boiling water, can cause the stone to crack due to thermal shock.

Can You Wear Amethyst in the Shower?

Many people wonder if it’s safe to wear their amethyst jewelry in the shower. The short answer is yes! Amethyst is durable enough to handle showering, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: While water itself won’t harm the stone, shampoos, conditioners, or body washes that contain harsh chemicals might. So, try to avoid exposing your amethyst jewelry to such products.
  • Gentle Soaps Are Fine: Mild soaps will not damage the stone and can even help to clean it while you shower. Just be sure to avoid any exfoliating body washes that might scratch or dull your amethyst.
  • Dry After Showering: After your shower, be sure to dry your amethyst jewelry thoroughly to prevent any moisture from getting trapped in settings or crevices.

Cleansing Amethyst with Water

The Right Way to Cleanse Your Amethyst with Water

Cleansing amethyst with water is an essential part of crystal healing. If you believe in the metaphysical properties of amethyst, keeping your stone clean can help recharge its energies.

  1. Submerge in Water: Place your amethyst in a bowl of fresh water for a few hours or overnight. This helps to remove any negative energies and refresh the crystal.
  2. Use a Running Stream: If you have access to a natural stream or river, you can hold your amethyst under running water to cleanse it.
  3. Rainwater Cleansing: Rainwater is considered especially cleansing, so if it’s raining, you can place your amethyst outside to absorb the natural energy of the rain.
